Welcome to the Kinderhaus
Our bilingual Kinderhaus is located in a separate, bright and child-friendly building. Everything here is tailored to the needs of our youngest children.
Our own courtyard and an extensive playground with trees invite children to play in the fresh air and discover the surrounding nature. We have weekly sports lessons in the gymnastics studio and familiarise ourselves with the facilities of the Primary and Secondary School.
07.06.2024, 14:00h - 16:00h: Open Afternoon in the DSL Kinderhaus
Get to know "Das Kinderhaus" during an regular afternoon! We open our doors to you and your child. You will have the opportunity to experience an afternoon at the DSL Kinderhaus and talk to the Kinderhaus management, teachers and parents. We will be happy to show you around the group rooms and tour our spacious outdoor facilities with you. Your child is welcome to join one of the afternoon groups. Please register at admissions@dslondon.org.uk. We look forward to meeting you and your family!
Our centre comprises 7 groups:
four kindergarten groups with children aged 3 - 5 years
three Pre-School groups with children aged 5 - 6 years
There are always two teachers in each group. One of them is a native German speaker and one is a native English speaker. The child, their interests and needs, their abilities, strengths and also their limits are at the centre of our work. The teachers perceive each child as an individual with different experience and behaviour then that of the other children in the group. Welcome to our loving, diverse community!

Pedagogical Concept
The DSL Kinderhaus (kindergarten and preschool) is an inspiring place for children and teachers to develop together. Each child brings unique experiences and cultural backgrounds that are valued in our community. The focus is on individual play and learning, strengthened by shared experiences that no curriculum can replace.
Co-construction:
The child and their interests, needs, abilities and limitations are at the centre of our work. Co-construction is essential here - learning takes place through co-operation, with children and teachers shaping their learning processes together.
Development-orientated:
Individual needs lead to differentiated programmes, as each child is seen as a unique individual. Clearly defined boundaries and rules create a safe framework for children so that they can develop.
Holistic development:
Free play time is crucial for holistic development. Children choose their own play partners and games and can also withdraw. Here they not only experience success, but also learn from failure.
Exercise:
Exercise in the garden is a daily highlight. In addition to physical development, it promotes mental, emotional and social aspects, strengthens self-awareness and builds self-confidence.Our teachers: They play a decisive role by encouraging and supporting play and creating stimulating play opportunities. The relationship between teachers and children is of great importance - according to Goethe, you learn most from those you love.

Language
In our Kinderhaus, language plays an extremely important role. We work according to the immersion principle. This means that our teachers speak to the children exclusively in their German or English mother tongue. The children thus learn both languages in a natural context, during free play, in the morning circle, through finger rhymes, songs, stories and games.
To make it easier for multilingual children to enter our German-speaking primary school and to break down language barriers, we offer targeted support three times a week to children aged 4 and over as part of the "German for the start of school" programme (www.deutsch-für-den-schulstart.de). The active support of parents at home is important here.

Transition to the Primary School
At the age of 5, the children go to Pre-School where the focus is on preparing them for the Primary School. We collaborate closely with the Primary School to ensure a smooth transition for the children. The Pre-School has a timetable with set periods, although learning is still play-based and each day still includes a free play phase.
In addition to weekly gymnastics, the weekly schedule includes language development, number games, artistic design, music and science (knowledge and understanding of the world). The teachers pick up on the children's interests and expand them with educational activities; through observation, the staff can identify gaps in knowledge and experience and offer targeted support.
Towards the end of the pre-school years, primary school teachers visit the children at the Kinderhaus and invite them to visit their primary school classes. This helps avoid possible obstacles to the transition.
